When you look for something authentic and wish to create a natural feel in your home - showing up the raw building structures is the straight way forward. We've seen many homeowners taking down aging lath and plaster walls exposing bricks which successfully add the character to an interior and create instant focal point for the room. With having visual texture, a brick wall has a tactile appeal as well, which explains why people like to run their hands over the rough surface.
Exposed brick walls are especially popular in modern lofts and can add raw charm.
There are plenty of artificial wall plates with faux bricks on the market. You can make an investment and stick the plates to your wall. But think if it is going to convey the warm feeling with flaws to the blank space? Remember that there are no two bricks the same in nature ...
Let us show how to clean and expose the authentic brick wall, or its fragment, in your home and convey the history of the room with feeling of warmth and texture.
STEPS:
1. Clean up the plaster from the wall. You will see the rough texture and fragile composition of bricks. It can really make it a bit of a challenge to clean.
2. Using a spray bottle or clean brush, wet the bricks. Apply a thin coat of a soapy paste made from a mix of dish soap, table salt and water in equal parts.
Scrub gently with a sponge or brush.
Rinse with a warm water.
Let the wall dry and check the results.
3. If the wall is clean, job well done! Prepare to paint the wall.
Stiff brush and vacuum to remove visible dust. You will probably see some cracked bricks or crumbling mortar - fill in the missing fields before sealing. Repointing will help to not
only improve the appearance of the wall but also strengthens the
stability of the structure.
4. At last, apply the transparent and matte primer/sealant to maintain the authentic texture of the brick.
FINAL VIEW:
The exposed brick wall has been sealed ! It will never look perfect, but it absolutely loads the room with the disheveled look. The brick texture reflects less light and fills the room a warm and cozy atmosphere.
